Is dealcoholized wine same as non-alcoholic wine?

The difference is in the alcohol volume

Hello to the two new subscribers who’ve joined me on this journey 💫

Happy Friday, folks

The below point from Trish Sammer was good to read. I am always happy to read about someone who enjoys reading the newsletter.

And we’re still on the non-alcoholic/dealcoholized wine train.

What’s the difference between non-alcoholic wine and dealcoholized wine?

The term dealcoholized wine is often used interchangeably with non-alcoholic wine. However, they differ in how they are produced and the final alcohol content.

Non-alcoholic wine starts as traditional wine but then undergoes one of these processes to strip out the alcohol:

  • Vacuum distillation

  • Or reverse osmosis.

The end goal? Reduce the alcohol content to less than 0.5% by volume (note the alcohol volume). This makes it legally non-alcoholic in most countries.

Dealcoholized wine is the same. It goes through similar processes, although a bit more stringent, such that you end up with a lower residual alcohol content - often less than 0.05% by volume.

Did you know that fresh juice typically contains alcohol? Often well below 0.1% by volume. This amount can vary and will depend on a lot of factors.

Why? Because juice ferments and in the process produce a small amount of alcohol due to natually occuring yeast and the presence of sugars.

Now, go uncork a bottle. It’s the weekend.
