How to train your nose to recognize wine smells and flavors

Train that nose!

Happy Friday,

Dry January doesn’t mean we still can’t improve our wine chops - such as your ability to identify smells and flavors in wine.

Here are some ways to train your nose

ChatGPT Prompt: Cinematic image of a colored lady sniffing a rose, with soft sunlight casting gentle shadows on her face. The scene is imbued with a contemplative mood.

  1. Smell your coffee before you drink it. I smell mine twice - as I add hot water and the coffee grounds dissolve AND just before I take the first sip.

  2. When you cut your lawn for spring cleaning, spend some time taking in the earthy smell that takes over the air.

  3. Smell the cut grass after you just mowed your lawn.

  4. Open up your spice jars and take in how they smell.

  5. Smell your flavored teas before you sip them.

  6. Smell the fruit (I love how tangerines/clementines and apples smell) before you bite or peel it.

  7. Sniff a slice of freshly cut lemon.

Doing these activities helps you train your brain to recognize different smells and flavors. And you can start to match them with the various flavors that hit your nose when tasting wine.

Cheers to the weekend,

Dozie ❤️
